Select the correct trim tool

The following are recommended tools and basic pruning techniques to maintain plant health, and emphasize key attributes, such as leaves, bark, branch structure, flowers, fruits or other desirable characteristics.

Recommended tools

Bypass the pruner or pruner

Bypass the pruner or pruner

Bypass shear

The bypass scissors are like scissors. The blades cross each other, leaving a clean cut. According to the hardness of the wood, they can cut branches up to three quarters of an inch in diameter. If you can see and control the cut, it will be very effective to bypass the rod trimmer.

Keep the scissors sharp and clean

Grind only the sloping side of the cutting blade. Only use flat files with very fine cutting surfaces.

Find the right angle - maintain the existing cutting angle; Typically+/- 22.5 degrees. It is easier to find this angle than it sounds: place the file at a 90-degree angle on the blade. Lower the file to 45 degrees, and then lower the file by half to reach 22.5 degrees.

Use smooth strokes on the entire edge of the blade.

Grind off burrs. After completion, gently pass the file through the flat lower surface of the cutting blade once to remove any burrs formed during the grinding process.

Use kitchen scrub pad (steel wool or non-metallic) and warm soapy water to clean the scissors.

It may be necessary to oil the hinge, but it can be avoided if the shear is dried immediately after cleaning.

Bypass rod trimmer

When you can clearly see and control the trimming, bypassing the rod trimmer can effectively trim branches up to three quarters of an inch.

Avoid excessive pressure

When using bypass shears or rod shears, avoid using too much force with one hand or squeezing the handle with both hands to force cutting.

Use with fruit saw

According to the size requirements of each branch, it is also a good practice to exchange bypass scissors and fruit saws.

Fruit saw

The fruit saw is suitable for larger cuts that can be removed with one hand under moderate pressure than the bypass shear. For most home gardeners, a fruit saw with a 6-8 inch blade is enough. Models with fixed blades and retractable blades are also acceptable, but some people prefer the firm grip of fixed blades rather than the smaller profile of retractable blades.

Other trimming saws

Trimming saws with fixed and foldable blades are very useful for larger cuts. Note: Unlike carpenter's hand saw, most pruning saws only cut when pulling, not when pushing.

Tools not recommended for trimming:

The working mode of anvil shear is to let the cutting blade fall on the anvil. It is not recommended to trim living wood, because they will squeeze the branch tissue, making it more difficult to seal the cut properly.

After pruning, pine and cypress can be used to cut wood on the ground. However, they are generally not recommended to be trimmed because they often cause irregular cuts and cannot be properly sealed
